Cognitive style and intellectual and creative development of first-graders

The article presents the data of empirical research of cognitive style in first-graders and its connection with their intellectual and creative development. It is shown that pronounced manifestations of the cognitive style – «field dependence» or «field independence» – are found in children already at the beginning of the primary school age. The evidence is presented indicating that first-graders with a field-independent cognitive style outperform their field-dependent peers on a number of indicators of creativity, intelligence, and academic success.
