In a review paper, a comparative methodological analysis of the ontological approach to the study of perception (V.A. Barabanshchikov) and transcendental psychology of perception (A.I. Mirakyan) was conducted. It revealed the positive aspects of the ontological concept of perception, which overcomes the limitations of an epistemological approach, but at the same time showed the difficulties faced by the ontological concept of perception in solving the problem of generation of perceptual image. The analysis in the context of philosophical and psychological views of S.L. Rubinstein led to the conclusion that one of the possible methods of studying the problem of generating mental images may be the method of metaphysical reasoning. This might be proved by an aphysical approach developed by A.I. Mrakyan used in the study of the principles and laws of the generative process of perception.
