This review covers the basic theoretical and methodological aspects of the working memory. We analyzed a number of empirical studies which showed the benefit of a multicomponent model of the working memory. We examined the results of the studies on the relationship of the working memory and cognitive abilities and showed the role of the prefrontal cortex and other parts of the brain in the implementation of the functions of the working memory etc. The twin studies revealed the contribution of the genetic factors to the individual characteristics of the working memory. It was found that the magnitude of genetic influences on the function of information processing in the working memory depends on the complexity of the task and the requirements that the task imposes on the subject. The article also highlights the issues that require further investigation.
