NEUROCOGNITIVE FEATURES OF APOLIPOPROTEIN E (APOE) Ε4 ALLELE CARRIERS

In the review, neuro-cognitive features of APOE ε4 allele carriers were analysed. The material generally shows a rather complex and contradictory impact of APOE ε4 allele on cognitive processes and brain mechanisms. The specific «pool of cognitive resources» associated with variants of this genotype, particularly in its monozygote – ε4/ε4 – a form designed for the high level of functioning only for a relatively limited time. After 50 years, the increase in the number and severity of accumulating at different levels of brain organization of neurophysiologic defects, as a rule, can not be fully offset by the additional resource mobilization, resulting in a significant number of cases to a characteristic pattern of cognitive decline and subsequent decline. A number of unresolved issues and the roles of further researches were formulated.
